Meet PHOEBE - Paws Behind Bars Prison Dog Training Program

PHOEBE is a 1-year-old, female Black Mouth Cur mix who weighs 55 lbs. She adopted out from our program as a puppy and was returned late last year. The reason given was they didn't have time for her, and she was spending long hours in a crate. We are glad she's back with us.

Like so many "teen" pups who end up in our program, we enter them into our Paws Behind Bars prison dog training program. Phoebe's previous owners had given her an obedience foundation, so she's currently brushing up on that. Where the prison will really benefit her is with social skills. She's immersed in a world of human and canine attention, and she's loving it!! Teenagers need to kick up their heels and step out a little to help manage their energy, and this is what she's getting to do. Of course, within reason; this is where learning boundaries comes in.

Phoebe has a lovely temperament, and she was very gentle with the small children in her previous home. She's proven to be great with the other dogs in the prison. We don't know about cats. She's not real fond of her crate (understandably so). She's so loving the attention that when its "not her turn," she'll play games to get it (maturity will take care of this). So for now, we're going to let her grow up and mature a bit in a great, supportive environment where she cant get into too much trouble!

IMPORTANT:  Please Keep in mind both the age and life expectancy of the dog or cat.  Our guiding principle for adoptions is to seek the right fit for our rescues and the families, including a home that can stay committed to the animal for life.

PLEASE NOTE:  If you’re interested in adopting, our process begins with the submission of our online application, or email us if you submitted an application within the last six months.  We review and schedule meet and greets (with approved applicants only) based on the order received.

Please see our FAQ page for the answers to any other questions you might have regarding the adoption process.
